Can I send in a resume?

Most positions in the DMV are filled through competitive exams. State agencies use the resulting eligible lists to hire people. Therefore, you cannot simply apply for most positions at NYS Department of Motor Vehicles unless you are sent a canvass letter that results from your name appearing on an eligible list.

However, if you are certified through the Workers with Disabilities Program (55-b) or the Veterans with Disabilities Program (55-c), you may send in your resume, along with a Civil Service letter confirming your certification with this program, to the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles. How often are exams offered?

Most exams open to the public are held approximately every four years. Applications for Continuous Recruitment Exams external link are accepted continuously, with no application deadline.

Should I bother taking exams if a New York State agency is under a hiring freeze?

Many exams are given only once every four years. The lists that result from these exams may be used for four years or more to hire people. Therefore, if you qualify for a currently announced exam, this is your opportunity to apply. After the exam is given and the resulting lists are established, agencies canvass active eligibles when they have an opening. After the hiring freeze ends, state agencies may be using those eligible lists at a more rapid pace to fill jobs.

I received my qualifying degree or other higher education in a foreign country.  What documentation do I need to prove my credentials?
