Driver's Manual and Study Guide

This online version of the New York State Driver's Manual contains substantially the same information contained in Parts 2 and 3 of the printed Manual (Chapters 4 through 12) dated 9/11. Chapters 4 through 11 include the material you must read and understand to pass the written test for a Class D, DJ or E learner permit. Each of those chapters has an interactive quiz that includes actual DMV written test questions.

To use the Manual and quizzes:

  1. Read a chapter.
  2. Take the quiz for that chapter and get your grade.
  3. If you miss a question, the quiz results page provides a direct link to the correct information in the online Manual. Read the manual sections for the answers you got wrong.
  4. Take the quiz again, if necessary, and then go on to the next chapter.

Part One

Part One of the printed NYS Driver's Manual (MV-21) includes the chapters "Driver Licenses," "Keeping Your License" and "Owning a Vehicle." While Part One contains important information every driver should know, the information is not covered on your learner permit written test and is not included here.

To get instructions on how to apply for your permit and driver license, and for additional information about driving in NYS, go to the web site Driver License Page and the Resources for Younger Driver Page or Search DMV.

For information about vehicle ownership, go to the Vehicle Registration and Title Certificate Page or Search DMV.

The information on the web pages above is normally the most up-to-date information available from the DMV. If you want a printed version of the Manual that includes both Part One and Part Two, download the PDF version of the printed NYS Driver's Manual. You must have a version number of 7.0 or later of Adobe Acrobat Reader® installed on your computer to use the PDF Manual. The latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader® is free at the Adobe web site. external link
