Statement from Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Barbara J. Fiala
on State Inspector General Ellen N. Biben's report on Ophadell Williams, Jr.
"I want to thank Inspector General Biben and her staff for the comprehensive investigation they conducted into the matter of how Ophadell Williams, Jr. obtained and retained a commercial driver license. Based on the IG's recommendations, and other initiatives that have already been undertaken by the Department of Motor Vehicles such as the use of facial recognition technology and adjusting procedures to minimize the creation of records not matched to a valid New York driver license, public safety on our roadways will be enhanced by ensuring that those who operate tour buses or transport large numbers of people are qualified to do so. DMV is receptive to all ideas that seek to improve oversight and regulation of licensed commercial drivers and looks forward to continuing to work with the Inspector General and other appropriate agencies in that effort."
