With the approach of Veterans Day, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is releasing a redesigned custom license plate that is available to U.S. veterans with vehicles registered in New York State. The updated veteran plate features the U.S. flag in the background and the word "Veteran" appears to the left of the plate number. It is available for both passenger and commercial vehicles.
"We could not enjoy the privileges of freedom and security without the service of our men and women in uniform," said DMV Commissioner Barbara J. Fiala. "We are very proud to offer this redesigned license plate to New York's veterans in recognition of their service and sacrifice."
Applicants are required to provide a copy of their DD-214 or discharge papers or other proof that they are a veteran. The plate is also available with the International Symbol of Access (ISA) for any registrant with a disability who qualifies for such a plate. A plate with the words "Disabled Veteran" is also available in a similar design.
Customers who currently have an older version of the veteran plate may upgrade to the new design for $28.75 which includes the plate manufacture and document fees. Qualifying motorists wishing to order a veteran plate for the first time will pay an additional $10.00. There is no annual fee for standard veteran plates but registrants will need to pay the registration renewal fee every two years. The plate can also be personalized with up to six characters, including spaces, for an additional fee.
