Read These Instructions Carefully

Read the instructions (form MV-82.1) and the information about proof of identity (form ID-82). To renew your vehicle registration, complete the application (form MV-82).

Send photocopies of your NYS photo driver license or other proof of identity that equal a value of six points or more. Do not send your original proofs of identity.

If your address has changed, write the new address on form MV-82. The DMV will change the address on that vehicle registration only. To change your address on your photo documents and other vehicle registrations, see the instructions on how to change your address or your name.

You can have your registration items sent to an address that is different from the address on your registration document. Include a separate note and clearly print the alternate address. Do not write the alternate address on form MV-82.

If your name has changed, you must visit a DMV office. You cannot change your name by mail. See the instructions on how to change your address or your name.

Determine Your Fee

The weight of your vehicle determines the amount of your fee. The total amount of your fee can include a fee for custom plates or a vehicle use tax. Your registration fee normally does not change:

  • if you did not move away from a county or into a county which collects a vehicle use tax;
  • if you did not transfer your registration to a different vehicle; or
  • if you did not get a custom plate.
  • Your current registration fee is shown on your current registration document under the words, "AMT PAID (INCL ADD CHG)".
  • Determine the registration fee for a passenger vehicle.
  • Determine the registration fee for a commercial vehicle.
  • Find your type of custom plate to determine your annual fee. Multiply that amount by 2 to determine the 2-year registration fee.
  • Make sure that you include the vehicle use tax for some counties. The tax is listed on the fee charts.

Pay your fee by personal check or money order payable to "Commissioner of Motor Vehicles".

Important: Fees that are incorrectly calculated cause delays. If you do not know the correct fee, make your check payable to "Commissioner of Motor Vehicles", but leave the amount blank. The tear strip receipt that you receive with the registration documents will show the total amount of your fee.

Mail the Form, Fee and Proofs

Send all your documents and your payment to the address shown below. Your registration items will arrive in two weeks. If you do not receive the items within two weeks, contact your DMV Call Center or visit a DMV office. Your items will not arrive as quickly by international mail.
