Your mailing address on DMV files must be your current mailing address. You cannot change your address using this transaction. You can first change your address online, and then process this transaction.
If you file a request with the US Postal Service (USPS) to forward mail there, is no guarantee that the USPS will forward all DMV documents to the new address.
Read the instructions to change your address on DMV records and documents.
Yes, but the new document will then display your previous name. You cannot change your name during this transaction. If you recently changed your name, read the instructions to change your name on DMV documents and DMV records.
If the reason you did not receive a renewal notice is because of a mail delivery problem or a production problem at the DMV, you can normally renew online. You cannot renew your registration online if the reason you did not receive a renewal notice is:
The transaction displays an error message if your registration is not eligible to be renewed or cannot be renewed online.
Yes. After your online renewal is processed, you can download and print a temporary certificate of registration in PDF format. The temporary certificate is valid for 10 days from the date of the transaction. The temporary certificate cannot be transferred.
You can renew your vehicle registration a maximum of 75 days before the expiration date. You cannot renew your registration more than 75 days before the expiration date; you will receive an error message that explains that you cannot renew early.
You can also receive the error message that it is too early to renew your registration if you click your mouse cursor on the button that displays the words "Submit My Order" more than one time during the online renewal transaction. Click on the button only one time.
At the end of your transaction, you will have the option to download and print a temporary certificate of registration. The temporary certificate is only valid when used along with the current registration sticker. The temporary certificate allows you to continue to operate for up to 10 days while your new registration is delivered by mail.
You only need to print and use the temporary certificate if your current registration is expired or will expire within 10 days of the date of your online renewal.
New York State recently introduced new Empire Gold plates.
Yes. Trailer registrations are valid for one year and expire on December 31. If you will not begin to use your trailer until after December 31, you can renew the registration on a later date, but the expiration date of the renewed registration will be December 31. The pro-rated registration fee you pay is a lower fee. The amount of the fee depends on the date that the DMV processes your renewal.
You must have a valid registration and a plate sticker to use the trailer. Make sure that you process your online registration renewal a minimum of two weeks before the date that you need the registration documents.
You can download and print a temporary certificate of registration at the end of your transaction. The temporary registration is valid for 10 days and is not transferrable.
Allow at least 10 days to receive your new documents by mail. Express mail delivery service is not available.
This transaction is normally available 24 hours each day.
The DMV normally processes online transactions immediately. If the DMV cannot immediately process your transaction, you will receive a confirmation that the DMV "received" the information that you entered. The DMV will process your transaction on the next business day, and will send an email message to confirm your transaction was processed.
There is no additional cost or fee to use this online transaction. You pay the same fees that you would pay if you did the same transaction by mail or at a DMV office.
You must use a credit card or a debit card to pay for this transaction online. The DMV accepts these credit cards:

You can use a debit card if the debit card was issued by MasterCard® or VISA® and the card does not require a personal identification number (PIN).
The DMV uses secure socket layering (SSL) to protect your information. The DMV encrypts your credit card information and your personal information so other Internet users cannot read the information. Read the DMV Privacy and Security Statement.
The online transaction shows you the amount of your payment before you submit your payment. If you do not submit your payment, the DMV will not charge the amount to your credit card.
After the DMV processes your payment, you will see the amount of the payment in the confirmation messages from the DMV and on your credit card statement.
You will need your confirmation number if you contact the DMV about your online transaction. After you select the button to submit your payment, a confirmation message will appear in your browser window. The confirmation message contains your Confirmation Number and other information about your transaction.
The confirmation message can take several seconds to appear. If the message does not appear immediately, do not select the button to submit your payment again. If you select the button more than one time, you can receive an error message.
When the confirmation message appears in your browser window, write your Confirmation Number on a piece of paper.
You can also print the confirmation page and print a temporary certificate of registration in PDF format. The temporary certificate is valid for 10 days and is not transferrable.
After you submit your payment, you will receive an email message that includes your Confirmation Number.
No. You cannot cancel this online transaction after you submit your payment. If you want a refund of the renewal fees for a registration you will not use, see the registration refund information.
