How to Renew Your Snowmobile Registration Online

NOTE: At the end of this transaction, you can download and print a temporary certificate of registration valid for 15 days for use while you wait for your new registration documents to come in the mail.

1. Determine if you are eligible:

This transaction allows the registrant to renew a NYS snowmobile registration. At the end of the transaction, you receive a 15-day temporary certificate of registration in PDF format. You will also receive a regular registration document by mail.

This transaction cannot be used by a non-resident of NYS to apply for an original NYS snowmobile registration. You can use another online transaction to apply for an original NYS registration for an out-of-state snowmobile.

Note: All snowmobiles operated on any part of a roadway or shoulder of a highway in New York State must be covered by minimum liability insurance.

You can use this transaction if:

You own the snowmobile to be registered.
The snowmobile is currently registered in your name.
The snowmobile registration use type is pleasure (PLEA), Rental (RENT) or commercial (COMM). You cannot use this transaction if the registration use type is Dealer (DEAL) Government (GOVE) or Emergency (EMER).
Your mailing address on DMV files is your current address. You cannot change your address during this transaction. You can first change your address online, and then process this transaction.

2. Determine what you must have and what you need to know:

To do this transaction online, your web browser must permit cookies.

You cannot cancel this transaction. You cannot receive a refund.

You must download your temporary certificate of registration (PDF) at the end of the transaction, before you close your browser window. You will not be able to come back and download the temporary certificate later. The temporary certificate allows you to continue to operate for up to 15 days while your new registration is delivered by mail.

Note that if the date of your transaction is:

On or before March 31, your registration will expire on August 31 of the current calendar year.
After March 31, your registration will expire on August 31 of the next calendar year.

You must have these items or this information:

A credit card accepted by DMV to pay the fee.
The decal/registration number from your current NYS snowmobile registration.
Your name as it appears on the registration document.
Your current ZIP Code.
If you are a member of a New York State Snowmobile Association (NYSSA) snowmobile club, the voucher ID number from your current voucher.
A pen or a pencil and a piece of paper, or a printer, to record your Confirmation Number.

What is a New York State Snowmobile Association (NYSSA) snowmobile club voucher ID No.?

If you are a member of a NYSSA snowmobile club, you receive a voucher that includes an ID number. Your voucher ID number is located in the top right corner of your NYSSA club membership voucher, above the barcode. If you have a current NYSSA voucher, enter the voucher ID number in the box provided. If you do not have a current voucher, skip the voucher ID number section.

If you have a current, valid NYSSA voucher, the fee for your registration is $45.00. If you do not have a NYSSA voucher, the fee is $100.

What is the temporary certificate of registration? Do I need to print the temporary certificate?

At the end of your transaction, you will have the option to download and print a temporary certificate of registration. The temporary certificate is only valid when used along with the current registration decal on your snowmobile. The temporary certificate allows you to continue to operate for up to 15 days while your new registration is delivered by mail.

You only need to print and use the temporary certificate if your current registration is expired or will expire within 15 days of the date of your online renewal.

This transaction is normally available 24 hours a day.

Does the DMV charge an added fee to use this online transaction?

There is no additional cost or fee to use this online transaction. You pay the same fees that you would pay if you did the same transaction by mail or at a DMV office.

How do I pay for this online transaction?

You must use a credit card or a debit card to pay for this online transaction. The DMV accepts these credit cards:

MasterCard®
VISA® Card

You can use a debit card if the debit card was issued by MasterCard®; or VISA® and the card does not require a personal identification number (PIN).

The DMV uses secure socket layering (SSL) to protect your information. The DMV encrypts your credit card information and your personal information so other Internet users cannot read the information. Read the DMV Privacy and Security Statement.

How will I know the amount that the DMV charged to my credit card?

The online transaction shows you the amount of your payment before you submit your payment. If you do not submit your payment, the DMV will not charge the amount to your credit card.

After the DMV processes your payment, you will see the amount of the payment in the confirmation messages from the DMV and on your credit card statement.

You need your Confirmation Number if you contact the DMV about your online transaction. After you select the button to submit your payment, a confirmation message will appear in your browser window. The confirmation message contains your Confirmation Number and other information about your transaction.

The confirmation message can take several seconds to appear. If the message does not appear immediately, do not select the button to submit your payment again. If you select the button more than one time, you can receive an error message.

When the confirmation message appears in your browser window, write your Confirmation Number on a piece of paper. Do not try to print or to reload the web page in your browser window. Some browsers will erase your transaction information from the web page if you try to print or to reload the page, and you can lose your transaction information.

After you submit your payment, you will also receive an email that includes your Confirmation Number.

Can I cancel this online transaction?

No. You cannot cancel this online transaction after you submit your payment.
